How to set up Voice Meeter Banana for Rec Room

First download and install Voice Meeter Banana.

That download will install two programs. Voice Meeter and Voice Meeter Banana.
After installing make sure you run the one with Banana in the name.

Voice Meeter Banana, which I'll just call banana from here on in, is an audio mixing application which allows you to mix the audio from several different input sources and output various mixes to multiple physical and virtual outputs.

In my setup I have hardware inputs set up from my Vive mic and my guitar cable, plus virtual inputs from my "ears" in Rec Room, and a virtual AUX cable that I can plug VLC Media player into, or even plug the system sounds from my PC into, which includes audio from YouTube or other Browser sources.

In the screenshot I have Hardware Input 1 set to my Vive's microphone which shows up as Microphone (USB Audio Device), and Harware Input 2 set to my guitar cable which is named Microphone (2- Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter).

I have the hardware output A1 set to my Vive headphone jack which shows up as Speakers (USB Audio Device), and the virtual output B1 is automatically the one called VoiceMeeter Output (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO) which we will assign as the Record Device in the SteamVR Audio settings.
This means I can think of A1 as being the output I will hear, and B1 as being the output people in Rec Room will hear coming out of my mouth.

Down towards the bottom of the Hardware Input columns in banana we have toggles for which output each input will be mixed into.
You can see in the screenshot that for Hardware Input 1 (My voice), it's only going to B1, but Harware Input 2 (My guitar or ukulele) is going to A1 AND B1.
This means that I won't be having my own voice played back to me in my headphones, but it will be played out to Rec Room so that people can hear me talk and sing, but my instrument will be heard both by me (A1) and the people in Rec Room (B1).

Similar situation with the Virtual Inputs.
VAIO (The sounds coming from Rec Room) is going only into my ears (A1 on) and not echoing back out my mouth in Rec Room (B1 off)
AUX is going to both A1 and B1 meaning I hear it and so do the people in Rec Room.

With all that set up correctly now we're ready to hand control of our sound over to banana.
Right clicking on the volume icon in the Windows system tray will give us access to the Playback Devices and Recording Devices lists.
We need to set the default device for both playback and recording to banana VAIO as shown in the screenshot.
Same thing applies in SteamVR Audio settings.

With Windows and Steam VR audio devices all set to use banana VAIO we should be ready to go.
At this point it's a good idea to jump in to Rec Room and check that you can still hear and be heard correctly.
If not, you've got something wrong in the setup somewhere. Double check your configuration versus my screenshots.

Once you've got normal audio functionality in Rec Room while using banana, the last step is getting musical instruments, VLC and Youtube working.

We've already covered all the config you should need for musical instruments.
You'll notice that in my screenshot I've turned the gain up to 11.6 on my guitar cable, and I've turned the gate up to 1.1
I turned the gain up because my ukulele wasn't coming through loudly enough, and I turned the gate up to cut out any buzzing the cable was giving when I wasn't actively playing.

For VLC and Youtube we need to direct the audio into banana AUX.
In VLC this is done by selecting banana AUX as the audio device as shown in my screenshot.
For Youtube we need to change which sound device our system sounds are being sent to.
Left clicking on the volume icon in the Windows system tray will open the volume and device selection panel.
Clicking the little arrow in the top right corner will open the device list, then we just need to select banana AUX. Now any sounds from your browser or other desktop applications should be being sent through to banana and onward to our ears and out our mouth in Rec Room.
